But when Beatles fans realized the plans included the destruction of drummer Ringo Starr's birthplace, they accused the council of cultural vandalism bordering on the criminal.

It turns out Gerry & The Pacemakers weren't the only people in love with the Mersey River in Liverpool. A song written by John Lennon's late Uncle Charlie has been discovered and can be heard now almost 20 years after it was composed. The song, The Ships Of The Mersey, was recorded in 1991 when Charlie was 73.
