Heather's World: Honoring Those Who Sacrificed So Much
The Virtual Wall provides a web site for memorials to those 58,249 women and men who are named on "The Wall", the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, USA; those military persons who gave the "ultimate sacrifice" for their country. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington was built from private donations collected by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The Wall was dedicated in 1982, and completed in 1984 with the addition of the "Three Servicemen Statue." Since its completion, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington has belonged to the people of the United States of America and has been maintained by the U. S. National Park Service.
On The Virtual Wall, visitors may leave tributes, letters, poems, photos, and other memorials to someone named on The Wall for other visitors to view. The goal is to provide an environment like The Wall itself, with the dignity and respect those named on The Wall have earned. There are no flashy or noisy distractions, no commercials, and no fee to publish a memorial.

Grab your spoons and start your grocery lists. Start looking for the pink lids in stores near you this fall. They’ll be on packages of Yoplait® so you can feel even better about eating your favorite flavors. Then just save ‘em, rinse ‘em, and mail ‘em in by December 31st, 2009.
Yoplait® Lids Save Lives

Streamingoldies.com will look a little different in October. Ray has put the orange 45 on vacation for the entire month and he's replaced it with a reminder of what October is really all about. And you won't see the usual dark red background on the Home Page all month. That has been replaced by a softer color; a reminder of what October is really all about.
There has been a marked decline in the rate of new breast cancer cases but according to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. An estimated 40,170 women are expected to die from the disease in 2009 alone. It may come as a surprise to the guys reading this but breast cancer is not restricted to women. An estimated 1,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among men in the United States in 2009.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
We have made this commitment to turn pink on behalf of those who will be diagnosed with this terrible disease, but we're also doing it for survivors who have demonstrated remarkable courage.

Heather's World: FASHION TIPS FROM HEATHER
SENIOR DRESS CODE
Many of us over 50, WAY over 50 or on the way to 50 are quite confused about how we should present ourselves. We're unsure about the kind of image we are projecting and whether or not we are correct as we try to conform to current fashion.
In spite of what you may have seen on the streets, the combinations shown inside DO NOT go together and should be avoided.
I just received a powerful email from Bonnie Adams Scriba, a high school classmate and forever friend. The email contained a link to a 6-minute video every woman (and man) MUST watch. It is graphic at times but no one has ever said breast cancer is supposed to be pleasant.

On behalf of Polly and everyone involved with the second annual Polly's Think Pink Radio-Thon, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your support once again this year.
The event, held again this year at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, raised funds to benefit cancer research at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center on the DHMC campus in Lebanon, NH. It is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States, and is rated by US News & World Report as one of the top 50 hospitals for cancer care nationally.

Heather's World: A HEART'S JOURNEY
I have been blessed to meet many beautiful souls in my lifetime. Some I have encountered in the past few years, while others have been lifelong friends. One of those “forever friends” is Bonnie Adams Scriba, a school classmate from Springfield, VT. Bonnie and I met in the first grade and remained friends throughout our school years.
As everyone knows, once graduation day arrives, far too many people lose touch with the friends they bonded with. People head off to college or simply move away, and in many instances, they never cross your path again.
I have said many times I am fortunate to have graduated with a class that refused to accept the notion that time and distance have to keep us apart. Over the past forty years, most of us have continued to cling to childhood friendships and so it was this past June at our 40th Class Reunion that I once again found myself face to face with Bonnie.
Among the many topics of discussion was the fact Bonnie was very active in the fight against breast cancer. In fact, she was in the final stages of preparing for an annual event that is a vital part of her life. I could explain the details of that event but my words could never match hers. But before I turn this over to Bonnie, remember the first line I wrote…Beautiful Souls. Bonnie Adams Scriba is certainly one of those.
Bonnie & Lori A Story of Dedication and Love
Over the past 8 years I have actively volunteered to assist in the fight against breast cancer. Starting with the 3 Day 60 Mile Walk in 2001, I never dreamed the path I had set upon. What an incredible journey! My life has been enriched by the people I have met and the stories I have been gifted to hear. Many of you receiving this missive have only met me due to your own personal journey with breast cancer, your story shared with me by your friends. It is for you and the future that I will continue doing what I do. However, this has been my last year to fund raise. This year, with your support, I have raised nearly $7,000 for the fight against breast cancer. I am once again humbled by your generosity, especially in these difficult financial times.
Once again, I thank you all for your donations and words of encouragement. I hold you all close to my heart. Through the years we have together raised nearly $35,000! If by some chance you have a need to donate again next year, just reach out to me and I will gladly assist you in supporting my own endeavors or those of someone else.
The journey continues inside

Heather's World: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Race For The Cure - MY JOURNEY
This was the fourth consecutive year for me to participate as a walker, part of Team Heather in the annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure of breast cancer. I know you are all anxious to hear about the day, but I want to first explain how I became involved with this cause and how Team Heather was born.
My mom, Josephine was first diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 70’s. She took my younger brother to the doctors to be treated for an ear infection and happened to mention to the doctor that she had felt a little lump on her breast and asked him to take a look at it. The doctor ordered tests, and the results came back …

And so, it is over for another year.
Team Heather gathered again for The 2007 Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure, and this year, the crew was bigger, the support was better, and the outcome was magnificent!
The photos inside can’t adequately tell you about the passion this little band of heroes felt as they walked that 3.1-mile course in Manchester.
Yes, it was hot and humid, but that little problem wasn’t going to stop this team.

Heather's World: A REMINDER ... FROM A SURVIVOR
We are one week away from the 2007 Race For The Cure.
For anyone still wondering if they should make a donation, or even better, to join Team Heather in Manchester on July 29, I want you to read this article, which we published after last year’s event.
I hope it makes your decision easier.
I have been known to tell a joke or two.
I have been known to act like a loon if it makes someone smile.
I have also been known to move people to tears when I get serious about a subject near and dear to me.
I’m telling you right now I have never been able to muster up the compassion and courage that I saw exhibited this morning in a letter from Mary MacMahan.
Mary was one of the members of Team Heather yesterday at the 2006 Race For The Cure. Both Heather Rose and I were thrilled to have her join us, and yes, we were extremely proud of her. It isn’t the easiest thing to be a “survivor.” It takes far more courage than I possess, but I can only imagine that once someone has fought their way through this dreaded and cursed disease, they are the only people who can truly understand the impact it has.
After reading Mary’s letter, I wrote back to her, asking if we could print it because both Heather and I thought her message was important and would explain to people what she felt while walking yesterday. I offered to make the letter anonymous if she preferred.
Instead, she wrote back with the following words… ”If it will help, absolutely put it on the web site, name and all.
Have a blessed day!”
Please read her letter. Then you will understand why this very special woman, this very courageous and special woman, had me in tears this morning.
Then you will understand why she is so loved.

Heather's World: SHE'S WALKING FOR (and with) MOM
It might be easy to be proud of someone but it is often difficult to come up with the right words. Fortunately, Melissa Tennis has the ability.
On the upper left side of the home page (just above the green car), you will see A Daughter’s Love. Please listen to it, and while you do, you can read inside what Melissa wrote while you hear Heather read this young woman's most amazing profession of pride in her mother.
It is a remarkable love letter.
